Article #1
Opportunity to create a device that protects nautical
vehicles from wind damage
1)
UF Sailing Team’s equipment damaged by high
winds
3)
On December 14th, severe
winds damaged the UF Sailing Team’s fleet significantly. Eight of their boats
were totaled and two had minor damages. This was devastating to the teams goal
of making it to nationals this year, but are working hard to overcome this set
back and still believe they will make it. The new boats and repairs to the
existing ones should cost around $100,000 and may take quite some time. They
have created a GoFundMe and are hoping to raise some money to help them meet
their goal.
4)
The problem is that boats that were
kept at lake Wauburg were damaged or destroyed from unexpected winds that occurred
naturally.
5)
The UF Sailing Team has the problem,
as they are now in a difficult position trying to make nationals and compete
this year. They also have an additional problem of preventing the wind or
mother nature from damaging their expensive equipment again in the future.
Article #2
Opportunity to create new product to make up for lost profits
1)
Local vape shops lose profits due to recent tobacco
law
3)
This story discusses a federal and county law change
that moved the tobacco purchasing age from 18 to 21 in Alachua county and its repercussions
on local businesses. Specifically, a business called “101 Smoke Shop” has recognized
significant decreases in sales which has lowered their profits and revenue and
caused them to be forced to pay their employees less as well. They have seen a
direct decline because of this law change and can confidently attribute all of
the loss in revenue to the new legislation.
4)
The problem presented is that businesses that
rely on tobacco sales have taken significant hits to their revenue because of
new legislation that has decreased their customer base significantly.
5)
The problem is possessed by the business owners
relying on tobacco sales to generate enough revenue to run their businesses.
Without being able to sell to individuals aged 18-20, they are forced to find
new ways to make up for the lost revenue with new products or appealing to new
customers.
Article #3
Opportunity to create additional cyber security for students
who are concerned about their privacy and security.
1)
UF implements two-factor
authentication to combat cybercrime
3)
UF has recently introduced a new
software that will permanently change the process of logging into a UF online
account for the future. In order to further protect student’s online security,
at the end of the spring 2020 semester, UF will be implementing a new
two-factor authentication system to insure that people can not log into other
peoples accounts with only their username and password.
4)
The problem is that UF online
accounts are not safe enough and the security needs to be increased. UF
administration as well as students are fearful for their online privacy and
safety when using their UF account
5)
The problem is possed by the
university as well as the students. It is the university’s responsibility to
insure student safety, but it is the concern of the students to make sure they
are safe while using their online accounts and that nobody but them has access
to it.
Article #4
Opportunity to sell health supplies or protective gear for virus
outbreak
1)
UF Health monitors rumors of coronavirus
spreading to Gainesville
3)
This story gives an overview of the current
status of the coronavirus, an extremely dangerous virus spreading rapidly that
originated in China. In the article, it is exposed that a family in Gainesville
had recently visited the part of China where the outbreak occurred and came
back here before the quarantine began. UF Health directors are working to
monitor and control any outbreaks or suspected cases of the virus.
4)
The problem presented in the story is that there
may be a Coronavirus outbreak in Gainesville. If this were to happen, many
people would get very sick and possibly die.
5)
The immediate problem is the couple who may be
infected, however overall the problem is all of Gainesville’s to deal with. If
there was a Coronavirus outbreak, people would get very sick and the city may
even shut down. This is generally very bad for businesses and school would not
be able to be taught either.
Article #5
Opportunity to create a private investigation.
1)
Senator resigns during election season
3)
This story discusses UF student government
senator Zach Amrose’s announcement to resign from his position in student
government. The story goes into specific quotes by Amrose where he explains his
rationale for his resignation as struggling to balance the workload from this
position with his schoolwork. While this was his official statement, the
article creates juxtaposition by bringing light to the fact that his resignation
was on the same day the student government rules and ethics committee scheduled
a hearing to discuss claims that he unlawfully tampered with evidence.
4)
The problem that is presented in this story is
that Zach Amrose is unable to continue to serve as a senator for student
government. While this is the problem, there are two possible reasons why. One
is that he is unable to balance his position with his school work. The other possibility
is that in fear of the hearing he resigned so that he would not be held
accountable for accusations about him.
5)
Clearly the problem here is Zach Amrose’s. He
has one of two problems, Either he does not have the time to manage both his
position and school work, or he has been accused of something that may tarnish
his reputation.
Hi Benjamin, I really enjoyed reading your post. Mentioning a possible way in which one can possibly take advantage of the opportunity that exists due to the problem really stood out for me. The article about the measures that UF is taking to reduce cyber crime was really nice to read, especially being a student at UF. In such cases there is always an opportunity to improve the existing system to make it more secure.
ReplyDeleteHi Benjamin! I really enjoy your post this week! I too read the alligator as well. Article 4, was very interesting because it talked about how UF health was monitoring the Coronavirus. I feel that this has become a big worry with UF students due to the amount of people who did visit China over break. Hopefully, more people at UF will become more caught up with the actual facts about the virus then the rumors spreading around campus.
ReplyDeleteHi Benjamin,
ReplyDeleteIt was fun reading about the variety of news you had written about in your post! It is good to stay current within the local Gainesville news since we are residents here. I thought it is interesting that you chose to write about the two-factor authentication because I currently work in the registrar's office on campus and as employees, we have to go through this two-factor authentication process whenever we log in to a UF account since we have access to students' records. I did not know that this was going to be a process that the whole student body will have to go through soon, so I was surprised to hear about it. It is a pretty tedious way to log into our UF account, but if it is to protect us, I think it would be great.
